The Challenge: Unifying Oak and Painted Cabinetry
One of the most significant aspects of this project was the decision to respray the entire kitchen — including the natural oak appliance tower housing the Miele ovens, coffee machine, and warming drawer — in the same School House White. This was a critical call. Previously, the oak section sat awkwardly against the cream painted cabinetry, drawing the eye for the wrong reasons and breaking the visual flow of what is a very large kitchen.
By bringing everything into a single, unified colour, the kitchen reads now as one cohesive, considered space. The appliance tower — with its full-height cabinetry and generous crown moulding — slots seamlessly into the wider scheme, and the Miele appliances pop beautifully against the white surround in a way they simply didn’t against the raw oak.
Painting over solid oak requires careful preparation and the right products to ensure a finish that bonds properly and lasts. This is not a job for a tin of emulsion and a brush — it demands professional-grade primers, proper surface preparation, and a spray-applied topcoat to achieve a result that will stand the test of time.
Respecting the Detail
Perhaps the most demanding part of this project was the sheer level of decorative detail that needed to be finished perfectly. The hand-carved corbels, the raised and fielded door panels, the decorative pilasters, the glazing bars on the display cabinets, the intricate moulding profiles on the range hood — every surface, every recess, every raised edge needed to be finished cleanly and consistently. There was simply nowhere to hide.

The transformation is breathtaking. What was once a disjointed, tired-feeling kitchen — however impressive its bones — is now a bright, cohesive, and genuinely glamorous space.
