Kitchen Respray – Wilmslow, Cheshire | Muna’s Kitchen
When Muna in Wilmslow decided it was time to update her kitchen, there was plenty about the existing kitchen that was still worth keeping. The cabinetry was well fitted, the layout worked and the traditional raised-panel doors had plenty of character — but the pine-effect finish was beginning to make the whole room feel dated.
There was also another issue. The original vinyl coating had started to lift and come away on eight of the doors. Rather than replacing the entire kitchen, these affected doors could be stripped back to the MDF underneath, professionally prepared and refinished along with the rest of the cabinetry.
The result is a great example of how an existing kitchen can be given an entirely new lease of life without the expense and disruption of replacing it.
The Colour: Howdens Reed Green
Muna chose Howdens Reed Green, which we applied in a semi-matt finish throughout the kitchen and adjoining utility area.
It was a fantastic choice for this particular transformation. The soft, muted green gives the traditional door profiles and decorative detailing a much more contemporary appearance while still suiting the character of the kitchen.
Greens like Reed Green have become an increasingly popular choice for homeowners looking to update kitchens with dated timber-effect finishes. They introduce colour and personality without overpowering the room and work particularly well alongside warmer, more traditional features.
In Muna’s kitchen, Reed Green complements the existing warm-toned worktops and terracotta floor beautifully. Rather than having to replace these elements as well, the new cabinetry colour helps bring the existing finishes together and gives the whole room a fresher, more considered appearance.
More Than Just a Colour Change
This project also demonstrates an important advantage of professionally refinishing an existing kitchen.
While the majority of Muna’s cabinetry was in good condition, the vinyl covering had begun to fail on eight of the doors and was starting to peel away.
Those affected doors were stripped of their original vinyl coating to expose the MDF beneath. The MDF could then be properly prepared and refinished, allowing the doors to be retained rather than unnecessarily replaced.
The remaining doors, drawer fronts, panels, plinths, cornices and fixed cabinetry were all carefully prepared to ensure the new sprayed finish was consistent across the entire kitchen.
Once complete, there’s no visual distinction between the doors that required additional restoration and the rest of the cabinetry — everything has the same smooth, uniform semi-matt finish.
The Preparation: The Key to a Lasting Finish
As with every kitchen respray we undertake, preparation is one of the most important stages of the process.
Kitchen surfaces need to be thoroughly cleaned and correctly prepared before any new coating is applied. Doors and removable components are taken away for professional preparation and spraying, while the fixed sections of cabinetry are prepared and refinished on site.
Worktops, appliances, tiles, flooring and surrounding areas are carefully masked and protected throughout the process.
Muna’s kitchen also features plenty of detailing, including raised door panels, decorative cornices, glazed cabinetry and open display units. Refinishing all of these elements in the same colour is what allows the transformation to feel complete rather than simply looking like a set of newly painted doors.
The Result: A Completely Different Kitchen
The before and after photographs show just how much the character of a kitchen can change without altering its fundamental layout.
The original pine-effect finish gave the room a much more traditional appearance and placed a lot of visual emphasis on the cabinetry. Once refinished in Reed Green, those same doors and decorative details feel considerably softer and more contemporary.
The transformation is particularly striking around the cooking area, where the new green cabinetry works beautifully alongside the stainless-steel ovens, hob and extractor. The existing brushed metal handles also complement the new colour, helping to give the kitchen a clean and cohesive finish.
The adjoining utility area was resprayed in the same Reed Green, creating continuity between the two spaces and completing the transformation.
Most importantly, Muna has been able to retain a perfectly serviceable kitchen — including doors that might otherwise have been considered past their best because of the failing vinyl — and completely transform how it looks.
And It’s Not Quite Finished Yet…
These photographs were taken before Muna had finished decorating the surrounding room, so this isn’t quite the final reveal.
With the cabinetry now transformed, Muna is planning to update the surrounding décor, which should make an even bigger difference and allow the Reed Green to really come into its own.
