The Original Bespoke Built in-frame Solid Oak Kitchen
This was no ordinary fitted kitchen. Made from solid oak and built approximately 45 years ago, the cabinetry featured traditional in-frame construction, raised-panel doors, decorative cornices and carefully shaped end units.
Despite its age, the kitchen remained solid, functional and full of character. Its excellent construction made it an ideal candidate for professional refinishing, allowing Mike and Judith to preserve the quality of the original cabinetry rather than replacing it with a modern mass-produced kitchen.
The oak finish had naturally deepened over time, however, and the amount of timber throughout the room made the space feel darker and heavier. A carefully chosen painted finish offered the perfect way to modernise it without losing its traditional appeal.
Preparing and Respraying the Solid Oak Cabinetry
A kitchen of this age and quality requires careful preparation to achieve a smooth, durable and consistent finish.
The doors, drawer fronts and removable components were professionally prepared and refinished, while the fixed frames, side panels, cornices and detailed in-frame sections were treated with the same level of care.
Every visible part of the kitchen was refinished to create a cohesive appearance while preserving the original raised panels, mouldings and bespoke detailing. The completed coating provides a hard-wearing, easy-to-maintain surface with the refined appearance of a professionally painted kitchen.
Finished in Farrow & Ball Light Blue No. 22
Mike and Judith selected Farrow & Ball Light Blue No. 22, a soft and elegant shade with subtle blue, grey and green undertones.
The colour brings a lighter and calmer feel to the kitchen without appearing cold or overly modern. It complements the traditional cabinet style beautifully, helping the craftsmanship and decorative detailing remain an important part of the room.
Its understated character also works particularly well alongside the white walls, pale tiled splashback and darker appliances.
New White Quartz Worktops and Cabinet Handles
The respray formed part of a wider kitchen update. The original marble-effect laminate worktops were replaced with genuine stone white quartz surfaces, introducing a cleaner, brighter and more luxurious finish.
New contemporary cabinet handles were also fitted throughout. Their simple shape and light metallic finish provide a subtle contrast against the blue-grey cabinetry and help complete the updated look.
Together, the resprayed cabinets, white quartz worktops and new handles have completely changed the appearance of the room without altering its established and practical layout.
A Modern Kitchen That Retains Its Traditional Character
The finished kitchen feels significantly brighter, more spacious and completely refreshed. Farrow & Ball Light Blue gives the cabinetry an elegant painted finish, while the new quartz worktops add a crisp and high-end focal point.
Most importantly, the transformation has preserved everything that made the original kitchen special. Its solid construction, in-frame design, decorative cornices and bespoke cabinetry are all still present, but they now feel relevant to the home once again.
It is a wonderful example of how a professionally resprayed kitchen can combine traditional craftsmanship with a fresh, contemporary finish.
